DAWN French has revealed the extent of the horrific racist abuse she suffered because of her marriage to Lenny Henry.
The comedian and actress, 60, was married to Lenny Henry for 25 years, during which time vile bullies would taunt her family by smearing POO across their front door, due to his heritage.
The abuse the family suffered was made even worse when they adopted their now 27-year-old mixed race daughter, Billie.
Speaking on Sunday Night, the star branded the bullies as “cowardly” and said: “It got pretty bad on some occasions.
“I mean there's the big, open, ignorant, cowardly attacks that are things like excrement on your door. We had that.”
She continued that she had her cars keyed with racist and derogatory slurs throughout her marriage to the star.
“That took me more by surprise because it's everywhere,” she said. “And only when you're married to a black man do you think, ‘Oh hang on, that guy just said that and thought it was OK to say’.”
Speaking about the incident and their marriage to The Sunday Times, back in September, she said: "I fell in love with a man and he happened to be black," she said.
"Getting s**t on your doorstep — these things make you steel up a bit and think: ‘Bring it on, I can deal with this.’
"And we were lucky we had a big house and a gate and could employ people to protect us when we needed it.
"Lots of mixed-race couples weren’t so lucky.”
The couple eventually split in 2010, but remain on good terms with her former husband, and still refers to him as one of her “best friends”.
Dawn went on to wed Mark Bignell, boss of Hamoaze House charity, in 2013 - and the couple now live in Cornwall together.
Speaking about her new relationship, she said: “I remarried and I married a very cheerful man, and I’ve come to realise just how important cheerfulness is – it’s a wonderful thing."
