PER MERTESACKER has accused Arsenal of lacking a cutting edge.

The <a href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/premteams/arsenal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gunners</a> defender saw his side crash out of the FA Cup quarter-finals with <a href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/6997753/Arsenal-1-Watford-2-Odion-Ighalo-and-Adlene-Guedioura-ruin-Gunners-hopes-of-winning-third-successive-FA-Cup.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a shock 2-1 home defeat by Watford on Sunday.</a>

He said: “Obviously we wanted to win and we came out in a strong way.

“But what we do lack at the moment is we need to score at some point.

“It looks like we play, and play and play until the opposing team scores.

“That is something we need to work on. We had the opportunities and the possibilities when they were 2-0 up to come back and we kept going.

“You have to give us credit because we kept going and created chance after chance..

But at the moment we lack that killer instinct.

“We need to work on that if we want to be successful in the Premier League and the Champions League.”

Arsenal have won just once in seven matches.

But Mertesacker insists the Gunners are not lacking confidence, but a cutting edge.

He said: “I think we looked pretty confident, how we worked together, how we played and how we defended.

Even in transition we really pressed them well. Even when we lost the ball we were straight away in there and we created these chances.

“But we were not relaxed. Even in the box we played and always found good positions, with the man in the right position, but we lacked that relaxation, even to hit the target we did not do that sometimes. We missed it too often.”

The Gunners season is now in tatters after their failure to win a third successive FA Cup.

Arsenal are third in the Premier League table, eight points off leaders Leicester.

They also trail 2-0 to Barcelona heading into their Champions League second leg at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.

But Mertesacker said: “Our season is not over. We play in a confident way, but maybe lack that bit at the end.

“What is really important in football, to be successful we need to score. The desire to play together and to be good at a team is there, you can feel that, even if there is a bit of negativity. I can understand that."
